Start with one fact that changes every other choice: Ski amadé is not a single ski area. It is a family of separate regions on a shared pass, and the village you sleep in decides which slopes you reach on skis. A chalet in Flachau or Wagrain puts you on Snow Space Salzburg. A chalet in Großarl puts you on the smaller Großarltal-Dorfgastein area. A hotel in Bad Gastein belongs to the Gastein region.
Most of our stays in this part of the province are in Flachau, where several lodge complexes put a sauna in every chalet. Wagrain adds a large whole chalet, a pool lodge and a hotel, Großarl has two whole chalets, and Bad Gastein has one hotel. Where a detail comes from a single listing we say so, and we tell you what to ask.
Ski amadé is a family of areas, not one. Check which area your village belongs to before you compare pistes.

Ski amadé explained: one lift pass, several separate ski areas
Ski amadé brings several ski regions of the Austrian Alps together under one lift pass, Gastein and Großarltal among them, each with its own lifts and slopes. Counted together, the network reaches up to 760 km of pistes with ski routes included. That figure is real, yet nobody skis it from one front door, so judge your chalet by the area around its own village.
For a chalet week the number that counts is the local one. Flachau and Wagrain share Snow Space Salzburg, given as over 210 km of pistes, which also links St. Johann-Alpendorf. Großarl shares an interconnected area with Dorfgastein of about 70 km, ski routes included. Bad Gastein sits in the Gastein region, with its own lifts and its own slopes.
That split should shape your plan. A group that wants plenty of mileage without driving should look at Flachau and Wagrain first. A group that is content with a smaller area will find Großarl easy to like. If you are still choosing a region, our comparison of the best Austrian ski resorts for a chalet week sets Ski amadé against the other big names.

The two main villages
Flachau and Wagrain, the Snow Space Salzburg villages
Flachau sits at about 920 m and holds most of our stays in Ski amadé. It is the home village of Hermann Maier, the double Olympic champion, and it hosts a women's race on the Alpine Ski World Cup calendar every winter. For a chalet group the practical point is access: the Tauern motorway has its own Flachau junction, so the village is one of the most direct in the region to reach by road.
Wagrain lies in a high valley that runs from St. Johann im Pongau on the Salzach towards the Enns. The B163 road links it with Altenmarkt and the Flachau motorway junction, so the two villages are a short drive apart and ski the same area. In our selection Wagrain is the smaller base, with one large whole chalet, a lodge complex with a pool lodge and one hotel.
Inside each village, the distance from your door to the lift matters more than the village name. Some Flachau listings give a distance to the piste or to a bus stop; one gives 400 metres to the slope with a note that the lift descriptions differ. We flag every gap so you can ask the owner before arrival, rather than find out on the first morning in ski boots.

Terrain by level
Skiing in Snow Space Salzburg and Großarl for every level
For Snow Space Salzburg, published piste splits differ by source and by how much of the wider area they count, so we do not quote one. Both sources we checked agree on the size, over 210 km of pistes across the linked villages. For a mixed group that is plenty of terrain for a full week.
Beginners and children need something else from a ski area: a nursery slope close to the chalet and a ski school meeting point they can reach without a long walk. Ask the owner which lift and which ski school are nearest, and how you get there with small children and their kit.
The Großarltal-Dorfgastein area is easier to read. Two independent sources agree on about 31 km of easy runs and 35 km of intermediate runs, with only a small share marked difficult, and a top lift at 2,033 m on the Fulseck. Families and improving intermediates will be comfortable there. If steep terrain is the point of your trip, set this page against chalets in St Anton am Arlberg and chalets in Sölden.

The southern valleys
Großarl and Bad Gastein: two more corners of Ski amadé
Großarl is the main village of the Großarl valley, which it shares with the village of Hüttschlag. The valley counts around 40 alpine huts. In winter the village skis the interconnected Großarltal-Dorfgastein area, which is part of the Ski amadé pass, so a day in Snow Space Salzburg means a drive rather than a lift.
We list two whole chalets in Großarl. Chalet Kleinbretteneben is listed for up to twelve guests and Chalet Wildberg for up to six, a size for one family or a few friends. Neither comes with confirmed detail beyond capacity, so the advice is the same for both: ask for the number of bathrooms, the sleeping layout and the distance to the nearest lift before you commit.
Bad Gastein belongs to the Gastein region of Ski amadé and is a spa town with the Felsentherme thermal baths. Our one stay there, Hotel Alpenblick, is a boutique hotel whose rooms and board we have not confirmed, so ask about family rooms and lift access first. For a different base in the province, compare chalets and apartments in Zell am See or the full list of Salzburgerland chalets.

Getting there
Getting to Flachau, Wagrain and Großarl by air, rail and road
Salzburg is the nearest airport listed for Snow Space Salzburg and the usual gateway for this side of the province. We could not confirm a single airport distance for Flachau from two sources, so we do not quote a transfer time. Ask your transfer company for the time to your chalet's exact address, and build in margin for snow on the road on a winter arrival day.
By car, the Tauern motorway (A10) has its own Flachau junction, and the B163 road runs from there through Wagrain towards St. Johann im Pongau. A car also makes the most of the pass, because the other Ski amadé regions are separate areas you reach by road. Our guide to getting to your chalet in Austria compares flying, rail and driving.
By train, Bad Gastein is the easy one, since the Gastein valley lies on the Tauern railway. For Flachau, Wagrain and Großarl we could not confirm the nearest station and the onward bus links from two sources. Check the regional timetable against your chalet's address before you rely on rail.

Flachau chalet lodges
Flachau chalets with a private sauna
Four of our Flachau stays are chalet complexes rather than single houses, and each lists a sauna with its chalets. That makes Flachau one of the strongest villages in our selection for chalets with a sauna or hot tub. The details below come from one listing each, so read them as the owner's description and use them as the starting point for your questions.
Lisa-Chalets has two sizes of self-contained chalet for up to six. The owner lists a bathroom for every bedroom, a private sauna in each chalet, a fireplace and a boot dryer by the door. The piste is listed at 400 metres, with a note that lift descriptions differ between listings, so check the walk if small children will be carrying their own skis.
Promi Alm Flachau has chalets for 6 to 13 people, each with a sauna. The largest is listed with five en-suite bedrooms, two fireplaces and its own wellness room, and the owner also lists boot dryers, a position on the piste and pets. Minimum stays are three nights outside peak periods and seven nights in the stated peak weeks of summer and winter, so check your dates early.
Alpenchalets Flachauer Gutshof gives every chalet its own sauna and a full kitchen, with optional half board and three Gutshof restaurants on hand. The owner also lists a fireplace, a boot dryer and pets, plus a playground and a child's bed on request. Two conditions need planning: the owner does not promise a specific chalet, and arrival falls between 15:00 and 20:00.
Almlust lists its Almlodge Deluxe units with a private sauna, a wood-fired hot pot, a fireplace and a daily breakfast buffet, and a shared indoor pool on site. Those extras belong to that category, so name it when you enquire. Half board at the Gutshof and breakfast at Almlust sit between self-catering and a catered chalet, and dog owners can compare dog-friendly chalets in Austria.

Wagrain stays
Wagrain chalets and lodges for groups and couples
Chalet Rustika I is the big whole chalet in Wagrain, listed for up to 12 guests by the owner. That capacity puts it among the large chalets in Austria for groups, with two families or a friends' week as the natural fit. The bedroom count, the bathroom count and the lift distance are all missing, so get those three answers in writing first.
Prechtlgut is a set of lodges rather than one house. Its Pool Luxury Lodge is listed at 150 m² over two floors for up to six, with a heated private pool of 14 by 4 metres, an Almspa with sauna, steam room and infrared cabin, and breakfast served in the chalet. The owner also lists a hot tub, a fireplace, a boot dryer and a position on the piste.
Read the Prechtlgut categories closely. Only the Pool Luxury Lodge is listed with the pool, only the Premium Almchalet explicitly lists a fenced garden, and sizes have changed between listings. Couples, families or friends travelling as couples who want a private spa and hotel-style service without leaving the lodge are the obvious match.
Hotel Grafenberg Resort is listed as a boutique hotel in Wagrain. Beyond the location we have no confirmed details yet, so ask about room types, board and the distance to the lifts before you choose it. Keep it on the list if some of your group would rather have a hotel room than share a kitchen.

Apartments and hotels
Ski apartments and apartment hotels in Flachau
Apartments Alpin Apart is the most clearly described apartment we list in Flachau: 55 m², two bedrooms and one bathroom for four to six, with a bus stop listed 25 metres from the door. Shops are listed at 5 kilometres, so plan a proper food shop on arrival day. Six people sharing one bathroom is tight in a ski week; four is a more comfortable number.
Aparthotel Panorama is an apartment hotel in Flachau with very little confirmed detail so far. Ask how many people each apartment sleeps, how far the nearest lift is and what the kitchens include. Those three answers tell you whether it suits a family week, a couple, or a group that wants several apartments under one roof.
An apartment gives up the private sauna and the extra space of a chalet lodge in return for a simpler stay. For a wider choice, see our ski apartments across Austria, and if your group is torn, read whether a chalet or an apartment suits your group. Those who would rather not cook at all can browse hotels and apartment hotels in the Alps.

Families and evenings
Ski amadé with children, and evenings in Flachau and Wagrain
For families, the most useful features in our Flachau selection sit inside the stays. The Gutshof lists a playground and a child's bed on request, several lodges list a bathroom per bedroom, and a private sauna lets parents relax after a long day once the children are asleep, without leaving the house.
On the slopes, choose the chalet by its distance to the nursery area and to the ski school meeting point, and ask the owner for both. A bus stop at the door, as at Apartments Alpin Apart, can be as useful as a short walk to the lift, as long as the bus runs at the times your ski school starts.
We have not rated the bars and restaurants of Flachau or Wagrain, and we do not name any. The food options in our listings are the three Gutshof restaurants, the breakfast buffet at Almlust and the breakfast served in the lodge at Prechtlgut; for the other stays, plan on cooking. For another Salzburgerland ski area with a different feel, compare our page on chalets in Saalbach-Hinterglemm.

Summer
Summer chalet stays in Flachau, Wagrain and Großarl
In summer the Wagrain lifts carry mountain bikers up the slopes, and Snow Space Salzburg runs several of its mountains as family adventure areas. The same chalets that work for a ski week work for a summer one, and the priorities shift: a garden, a terrace and somewhere to dry walking boots count for more than a boot heater.
Großarl is the stronger summer base of the three villages for walkers. Its valley counts around 40 alpine huts, which gives a walking group a wide choice of day destinations and lunch stops at different heights. A whole chalet such as the Großarl houses above suits a family or two who want to walk by day and cook together in the evening.
For more ideas, see our summer chalet holidays in Austria and the guide to hiking holidays in Austria, which explains what to check with an owner before a walking week. Minimum stays at some Flachau lodges apply in the peak summer weeks too, so settle your dates before you settle on a chalet.

How to choose
How to choose a chalet in Ski amadé
Start with the village, not the property. Flachau or Wagrain puts you on Snow Space Salzburg; Großarl gives you a smaller area and a strong summer valley; Bad Gastein gives you thermal baths and the Gastein slopes. Once the village is settled, the shortlist on this page usually comes down to two or three stays.
Then check four things for each stay: the bathroom count against your head count, the walk or bus ride to the lift, what the kitchen includes, and the arrival rules. Two of our Flachau lodges set minimum stays or arrival windows, and several listings give no bathroom count at all. A short email to the owner settles most of it.
We explain how we separate confirmed facts from single listings on our page about how we compare chalets, and the list of all stays across Austria lets you set these against other regions. If your group is split between cooking and being cooked for, our guide to catered and self-catered chalets shows what each option changes. For a smaller ski area in the same province, see Neukirchen and Bramberg on the Wildkogel.

Practical answers
Questions about Ski amadé: Flachau, Wagrain and Großarl
The ski area
What is Snow Space Salzburg and which villages does it link?
Snow Space Salzburg is the ski area shared by Flachau, Wagrain and St. Johann-Alpendorf in the Ski amadé network. Ski amadé and an independent ski guide both give it over 210 km of pistes. A chalet in Flachau or Wagrain puts you on this area.
How many km of pistes does Ski amadé have?
Ski amadé counts up to 760 km of pistes, ski routes included, spread across several regions, including Gastein and Großarltal. All of it is covered by one lift pass, but the regions are separate ski areas with their own lifts. From a chalet you ski your local area each day and reach the others by road.
Is Flachau good for beginners?
Flachau works for beginners when the chalet is close to a nursery slope and a ski school meeting point. We could not confirm a piste split for Snow Space Salzburg from two sources, so we do not quote one. Ask the owner which beginner area and ski school are nearest.
Can you ski from Großarl to Flachau or Wagrain?
Großarl belongs to a separate ski area, Großarltal-Dorfgastein, of about 70 km including ski routes. Snow Space Salzburg, which serves Flachau and Wagrain, is a different area on the same Ski amadé pass. A day on the Flachau or Wagrain slopes from a Großarl chalet therefore means travelling by road rather than by lift.
Getting there
Which airport is closest to Flachau?
Salzburg is the nearest airport listed for Snow Space Salzburg and the usual gateway for Flachau and Wagrain. We could not confirm an airport distance for Flachau from two sources, so we do not quote one. Ask your transfer company for the journey time to your chalet's address.
How do you drive to Flachau and Wagrain?
The A10 Tauern motorway has its own Flachau junction, which makes Flachau one of the most direct villages in Ski amadé to reach by car. From the junction, the B163 road runs through Wagrain towards St. Johann im Pongau on the Salzach, so Wagrain is a short drive on from Flachau.
Is Bad Gastein part of Ski amadé?
Yes. Bad Gastein belongs to the Gastein region, one of the regions on the Ski amadé lift pass. It is a spa town with the Felsentherme thermal baths and sits on the Tauern railway, so it is the easiest place on this page to reach by train. Its slopes are separate from Snow Space Salzburg.
Chalets in Ski amadé
Which chalets in Flachau have a private sauna?
Four Flachau lodges in our selection list a sauna with their chalets: Lisa-Chalets, Promi Alm Flachau, Alpenchalets Flachauer Gutshof and the Almlodge Deluxe units at Almlust. Each detail comes from one listing, so confirm the sauna for the specific chalet or category you book, along with the bathroom count and the distance to the lift.
Which Ski amadé chalets sleep 12 or more people?
In our selection, Chalet Rustika I in Wagrain and Chalet Kleinbretteneben in Großarl are each listed for up to twelve guests, Alpenchalets Flachauer Gutshof has chalets for up to twelve, and the largest chalet at Promi Alm Flachau takes up to 13. For a group this size, ask for the bathroom count and the sleeping layout first.
Is there a chalet with a private pool in Wagrain?
The Pool Luxury Lodge at Prechtlgut in Wagrain is listed with a heated private pool of 14 by 4 metres, an Almspa with sauna, steam room and infrared cabin, and breakfast served in the chalet, for up to six people. Only that lodge category is listed with the pool, so name it when you enquire.
Can you bring a dog to a chalet in Flachau?
The owners of Alpenchalets Flachauer Gutshof and Promi Alm Flachau both list pets in their details. At Almlust, ask for a pet-friendly unit before you book. Rules on the number and size of dogs differ, so confirm in writing which chalet your dog can stay in and whether the owner sets any conditions.
What is there to do in Großarl and Flachau in summer?
In summer the Snow Space Salzburg lifts run family adventure areas, and the Wagrain lifts carry mountain bikers. The Großarl valley counts around 40 alpine huts, which makes it a strong base for a walking week. Some Flachau lodges set minimum stays in the peak summer weeks, so fix your dates early.
