This page is the overview for the whole province. It sets the ski areas side by side, explains how they differ for beginners, families and strong skiers, and shows where our stays actually sit. Each area has its own page with the full list and sourced ski figures.
One practical point before you start. Salzburg Airport serves most of the province, and overnight guests in the state receive the Guest Mobility Ticket at check-in, covering public transport for the whole stay. A car is therefore less essential than in many Alpine regions, although the distances between ski areas are real and a chalet outside a village still needs a plan for the morning.
The province is a patchwork of ski areas. Pick the area first and the chalet second.

ExploreThe ski areas
The quickest way to make sense of skiing in Salzburgerland is to forget the provincial border and think in lift passes. The Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn has about 270 km of pistes and 70 lifts. Ski amadé spreads 760 km across five regions: Salzburger Sportwelt, Schladming-Dachstein, Gastein, Hochkönig and Großarltal. Zell am See and Kaprun pair the Schmittenhöhe with the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. Each of these can fill a week on its own.
Smaller areas fill the gaps between them. Obertauern, in the Lungau, has about 100 km of pistes and 26 lifts arranged around the village, so you can ski the whole Tauernrunde circuit in either direction. The Wildkogel Arena above Neukirchen and Bramberg has 75 km. In the far west, Königsleiten belongs to the Zillertal Arena, a 150 km area that runs on into the Zillertal in Tyrol.
Our selection follows that map. Ski amadé holds the most stays once you add up Flachau, Wagrain, Großarl, Mühlbach am Hochkönig and Bad Gastein, with the Königsleiten end of the Zillertal Arena and the Saalbach valley close behind. Zell am See and Kaprun, Obertauern and the Wildkogel villages have smaller groups. The page for Ski amadé chalets and the other area pages carry the full lists; the sections below explain what each group of stays does well.

Terrain by level
Intermediates have the easiest choice, because the big areas are built around blue and red runs. The Skicircus publishes its split as 140 km of blue, 112 km of red and 18 km of black: a lot of cruising mileage for a mixed group and a modest share of steep pistes. Ski amadé is larger again, but its 760 km sit in five separate regions, so find out which region your village skis before you count kilometres.
For beginners, the village usually matters more than the size of the area. Look for a stay close to a gentle lift, a ski school meeting point within walking distance and a bus stop near the door. A compact area such as the Wildkogel Arena keeps a first week simple, and some chalets remove the walk in ski boots altogether: at Chalet Apartment Bärlerhof in Königsleiten skiing starts on site.
Stronger skiers tend to look higher. The Kitzsteinhorn above Kaprun is a glacier ski area that tops out at 3,029 m, the highest point in the province, and it shares the Ski ALPIN CARD with the Skicircus. Altitude never guarantees conditions, but it is the first figure to compare for a week right at the start or end of the season. Our comparison of the best ski resorts in Austria sets these numbers beside the Tyrolean areas.

Season and evenings
The main areas plan their winters from late November or early December into April. The Skicircus has announced its 2026/27 season from late November to early April, subject to change, the Zillertal Arena runs from early December to mid April, and the Wildkogel Arena describes its season as December to Easter. At either end of the winter, check the lifts nearest your chalet as well as the area as a whole.
Evenings depend on the village and on how far you are from its centre. In a smaller resort the chalet kitchen does more of the work, so a stay that solves dinner can change the week. The owner of Weinzeit Chalet in Königsleiten runs a restaurant and wine shop, and Alpenchalets Flachauer Gutshof in Flachau lists optional half board with three Gutshof restaurants on hand. If you would rather nobody cooks at all, start with the catered chalets in Austria.
Read the distance to shops and restaurants on each listing as carefully as the distance to the lift. Chalet Pinzgauer Almhütte lists them at 700 metres, which is an easy stroll by day and a longer one after a full day on skis. Apartments Alpin Apart in Flachau lists shops at 5 kilometres, so plan a supermarket run on arrival day. Where a listing gives no figure, ask the owner rather than assuming there is a bakery round the corner.

Zillertal Arena
Königsleiten is a village of Wald im Pinzgau, in the state of Salzburg, and the Salzburg entrance to the Zillertal Arena with its 150 km and 52 lifts. A Salzburg address with a Zillertal lift pass confuses people, so here is how the site splits it: the chalets across the Zillertal Arena page covers the whole area, while the page for Königsleiten chalets covers this village on its own.
Being close to the snow is what this group does best. Chalet Dorferhaus lists the piste and the lift at 50 metres, with five bedrooms and three bathrooms for ten. Chalet H Königsleiten lists the piste at 25 metres and the lift at 400, over three floors for eight. Chalet Pinzgauer Almhütte has six bedrooms and six bathrooms for twelve, with both the piste and the lift that close. Chalet Apartment Bärlerhof is a two-bedroom apartment for four with on-piste skiing, wifi and a shared sauna, all confirmed.
For a sauna of your own, Chalet Edelweissalm has a private sauna, hot tub and fireplace confirmed in a 191 m² chalet for ten to twelve, with piste and lift at 300 metres. The owner of Weinzeit Chalet lists a terrace sauna in a 150 m² chalet apartment for six to eight. Edelweisshaus Top 10 is the small option, with two bedrooms for up to six. Further out, Chalet Schöneben Bauernhaus in Wald has a pool and shared sauna confirmed but lists the lift 5 kilometres away.
Three apartments in this cluster sit on the Tyrolean side: Apartments Johanna, Apartments Lena and Sruh Prime Apartment are in Gerlos, another Zillertal Arena village, listed for five to twelve, two to six and two to sixteen guests. Infinity Sky Lodge in Rohrberg is listed with a private infinity pool and a sauna. The page on chalets in Tyrol covers that province, and in Krimml the owner of Stadl Lofts Plattenalm lists four lofts, the largest for eighteen.

Skicircus
The Skicircus links Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Leogang and Fieberbrunn into about 270 km of pistes, and the Ski ALPIN CARD stretches that to as much as 408 km and 121 lifts by adding the Schmittenhöhe and the Kitzsteinhorn. For a group that wants a different mountain on several days, that pass is the strongest reason to base yourselves here. The page on chalets in Saalbach-Hinterglemm has the complete list.
This valley is where the big houses are. Landhaus Felix is listed for up to 26 guests, Holiday Lodge Fabian for up to 20 and Chalets Augustine for up to 14, though their layouts are still unconfirmed. Chalet Bachgut Berg has the numbers behind it: eight bedrooms and eight bathrooms in 340 m² for sixteen, with the piste listed 50 metres away. Chalet DreiHittn has two units for up to eight each. Larger parties can compare them among the large chalets for groups.
In Viehhofen, near Saalbach, Alpenparks Rehrenberg is a resort of chalet apartments with a pool, a hot tub, a shared sauna and on-piste access confirmed, and pets allowed; confirm the apartment size, since sources disagree on bedrooms. Hotel Almrausch, Hotel Panther and Residence Kristall offer rooms in the valley. On the Leogang side, the owner lists a private sauna, hot tub and heated infinity pool at BergWärtsGeist Senhoog Luxury Holiday Homes for five and at GipfelKreuzLiebe Senhoog Luxury Holiday Homes for six.
See:Landhaus Felix

Zell am See-Kaprun
Zell am See and Kaprun share a tourist region but ski two different mountains: the Schmittenhöhe above Zell, with 77 km of pistes, and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun, which reaches 3,029 m, together with the Maiskogel. Both sit on the Ski ALPIN CARD with the Skicircus, and Zell am See has direct trains from Salzburg, which makes it the simplest base on this page to reach without a car.
Alpenparks Central Zell am See is the most complete listing: a 60 m² apartment for up to six with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and the lift 250 metres away, and two sources confirm a shared sauna, a washing machine, wifi, pets allowed and a lift pass included. Sixty square metres is snug for six. Chalet Molly is a four-bedroom chalet whose owner lists a private Finnish sauna and a fenced garden, with the areitXpress lift 1.1 km away. Chalet Jasmin is listed for up to 22.
In Kaprun, Serviced Luxury Chalet Evi, Ski-in Ski-out is a 450 m² chalet with eight en-suite bedrooms, daily served breakfast and the Maiskogel piste at 0 metres, run strictly as a serviced stay for a group that would rather not cook. Hotel Der Waldhof in Zell and Hotel Tauern Spa in Kaprun are small hotels with little confirmed so far. The page for Zell am See chalets and apartments has the full set and the figures for both mountains.

Ski amadé
Ski amadé holds more of our Salzburgerland stays than any other area, spread over four of its five regions. Flachau and Wagrain ski Snow Space Salzburg, with over 210 km of pistes. Großarl skis Großarltal-Dorfgastein, Mühlbach am Hochkönig belongs to the Hochkönig region with Maria Alm and Dienten, and Bad Gastein lies in the Gastein valley, where Hotel Alpenblick is listed as a boutique hotel. Flachau is about 70 km from Salzburg Airport.
Flachau has the widest choice. The owner of Lisa-Chalets lists chalets with a bathroom for every bedroom and a private sauna, 400 metres from the piste. Almlust lists a private sauna, a wood-fired hot pot and a daily breakfast buffet for its Almlodge Deluxe. Promi Alm Flachau has chalets for six to thirteen, each with a sauna by the owner's account. Apartments Alpin Apart is the plainer choice, two bedrooms for four to six, and Aparthotel Panorama is an apartment hotel with little confirmed yet.
In Wagrain, the owner of Prechtlgut lists a 150 m² Pool Luxury Lodge with its own heated pool, an Almspa and breakfast served in the chalet. Chalet Rustika I is a whole chalet for up to twelve, and Hotel Grafenberg Resort is the village hotel option. In Großarl, Chalet Kleinbretteneben sleeps up to twelve and Chalet Wildberg up to six, both still waiting for confirmed bedroom and bathroom counts.
Mühlbach am Hochkönig has three larger houses. Almchalet Dorfblick is a whole chalet for twelve with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a fireplace, with pets and wifi confirmed. The owner of DasKöniglich Luxury Alpine Chalet lists 330 m², five en-suite bedrooms and a private panorama sauna for twelve adults and two infants, and Kellnergut chalet Frieda has four en-suite bedrooms for ten, a private bio-sauna and an optional chef.

Obertauern and Wildkogel
Obertauern, in the Salzburger Lungau, is a compact area of about 100 km of pistes and 26 lifts set around the village, so a group can ski the Tauernrunde circuit in either direction without a bus. It is not one of the five Ski amadé regions, so check which pass your week needs. Our three stays there are apartment hotels, listed with the other hotels and apartment hotels in the Alps.
Aparthotel Die Sonne has a 187 m² Sky Lounge apartment with three en-suite bathrooms, a panorama sauna and a lift listed 150 metres away, as the owner lists. Carpe Solem Jules has compact studios beside the Grünwaldkopfbahn and a restaurant that delivers to the room. Mountain Vita stands beside the piste and includes daily cleaning and breakfast, a good fit for a family that wants a kitchen without all the chores.
The Wildkogel Arena above Neukirchen am Großvenediger and Bramberg am Wildkogel has 75 km of pistes. Nationalpark Chalet Malhamhorn in Neukirchen is confirmed for twelve guests, and Maier Alm there is a 135 m² house with a private sauna and a fenced garden, by the owner's account. Chalet Apartment Leiter in Bramberg sleeps six, with the lift listed 4.1 kilometres away. The page for chalets in Neukirchen and Bramberg has the area figures.

Getting there
Salzburg Airport is the natural arrival point for most of the province. City bus line 2 runs between the terminal and Salzburg main station, and Postbus 260 runs from the station via the airport to Zell am See, so the Pinzgau is reachable without booking a transfer. Munich also works for the western valleys, but Zell am See is about 200 km from Munich Airport against about 80 km from Salzburg.
By road, Zell am See takes around an hour and a half from Salzburg Airport, and so do Saalbach-Hinterglemm and the Gastein valley; Flachau is about 70 km away. Zell am See has direct trains from Salzburg and is the nearest station for Saalbach-Hinterglemm, with buses up the valley, and the Gastein valley has its own stations on the Tauern line. A stay near a bus stop, such as Almchalet Dorfblick with one at 50 metres, saves a taxi each morning.
Once you arrive, the Guest Mobility Ticket changes the sums. Overnight guests in the state of Salzburg receive it at check-in, and it covers public transport across the province for the whole stay, from regional buses to trains. Ask your host to register you before arrival so the ticket is ready. Our guide to getting to your chalet in Austria covers flights from the UK and the main transfer routes.

Families and summer
With children, the details inside the house usually matter more than the size of the ski area. The owner of BergWärtsGeist Senhoog Luxury Holiday Homes lists a baby cot, high chair, baby monitor and toys on request, and Kellnergut chalet Frieda has a gallery family room that helps a mixed group of adults and children. Count bathrooms as well as beds, and families with a dog can start with the chalets that welcome dogs.
Summer is the other half of the year in this province. The Krimml Waterfalls, in the Hohe Tauern National Park, drop 380 metres in three stages, with a 4 km trail beside them that stays open until the end of October. Our page on summer chalet holidays in Austria lists the stays that open for the warmer months, and the Guest Mobility Ticket covers the buses to trailheads, so one car can stay parked all week.
For a summer week, look for outdoor space first. Chalet Molly in Zell am See lists a fenced garden, and so does Maier Alm in Neukirchen, both useful with small children or a dog. A sauna still earns its place after a long walk. The guide to hiking holidays in Austria explains what to check when walking matters more to your group than the lift map.

Choosing a stay
Decide in this order: area, access, then layout. The area sets your lift pass and the skiing you do every day. Access decides the morning: a piste at 25 metres, a bus stop at 50 or a lift at 5 kilometres are three different weeks. A listing that says on the piste is not automatically ski-in/ski-out in both directions, which is why the ski-in/ski-out chalets in Austria page treats the return run as its own check.
Then do the bathroom sums. Count guests against bathrooms, and ask how the beds are split when a listing gives only a maximum. Several of the big Saalbach houses give a guest figure with nothing behind it yet. We mark a fact as confirmed only when two sources agree and show the rest as listed by the owner; our page on how we compare stays explains the rule.
Finally, decide what kind of stay you want. A whole chalet gives one group one front door, a chalet apartment shares a building and sometimes its sauna, and an apartment hotel adds breakfast or cleaning to your own kitchen. The guide on choosing a chalet or an apartment sets out what changes for a group, and the chalets with a sauna or hot tub page filters for private wellness nationwide.

Practical answers
Yes. The province holds the Skicircus with about 270 km of pistes, Ski amadé with 760 km across five regions, Zell am See and Kaprun with the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, Obertauern and the Wildkogel Arena. Most of the terrain is blue and red, which suits intermediates and mixed groups, and the Kitzsteinhorn adds altitude up to 3,029 m.
The largest are the Skicircus (Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Leogang and Fieberbrunn) and the Ski amadé regions, including Flachau, Wagrain, Großarl, the Hochkönig villages and the Gastein valley. Zell am See and Kaprun ski the Schmittenhöhe and the Kitzsteinhorn, and Obertauern, the Wildkogel Arena and Königsleiten complete the list.
That depends on the area, because no single pass covers every resort here. Ski amadé sells one pass for its five regions. The Ski ALPIN CARD covers the Skicircus plus the Schmittenhöhe and the Kitzsteinhorn, up to 408 km and 121 lifts. Königsleiten uses the Zillertal Superskipass network, and Obertauern sits outside Ski amadé.
The big areas plan their winters from late November or early December into April. The Skicircus has announced late November to early April for 2026/27, subject to change, the Zillertal Arena early December to mid April, and the Wildkogel Arena describes its season as December to Easter. Check the lifts near your chalet for weeks at either end.
No. Obertauern lies in the Salzburger Lungau and is not one of the five Ski amadé regions, which are Salzburger Sportwelt, Schladming-Dachstein, Gastein, Hochkönig and Großarltal. It is a compact area of about 100 km of pistes and 26 lifts around the village, with the Tauernrunde circuit skiable in either direction.
Zell am See is about 80 km from the airport, around an hour and a half by road. Saalbach-Hinterglemm and the Gastein valley also take about an hour and a half, and Flachau is about 70 km away. Munich Airport is a longer alternative, with Zell am See about 200 km from it.
Many of them, yes. Zell am See has direct trains from Salzburg and is the nearest station for Saalbach-Hinterglemm, with buses up the valley. The Gastein valley has its own stations on the Tauern line. From Salzburg Airport, bus line 2 reaches the main station, and Postbus 260 links the airport with Zell am See.
It is a public transport ticket that overnight guests in the state of Salzburg receive when they check in. It is valid on public transport across the province for the length of the stay, including regional buses and trains. Ask your host to register you in advance so the ticket is ready on arrival.
Pick the ski area first. Königsleiten suits groups that want to be close to the piste, the Saalbach valley has the largest houses and the biggest linked area, Flachau and Wagrain have the most chalets with their own sauna, and Zell am See is the easiest base by train. Then compare lift distance and bathrooms per guest.
Yes. In the Saalbach valley, Landhaus Felix is listed for up to 26 guests and Holiday Lodge Fabian for up to 20, while Chalet Bachgut Berg has eight bedrooms and eight bathrooms for sixteen. Chalet Jasmin in Zell am See is listed for up to 22. Confirm the bed layout behind any listed maximum before you book.
At some stays, yes. Two sources agree that pets are welcome at Almchalet Dorfblick (Mühlbach am Hochkönig), at Alpenparks Central in Zell am See and at Alpenparks Rehrenberg in Viehhofen. The owners of Chalet Molly and Alpenchalets Flachauer Gutshof also list pets. Confirm the terms for your dog with the owner before booking.
Chalet Edelweissalm in Königsleiten is the one where two sources back up the private sauna. Owners also list private saunas at Lisa-Chalets, Almlust and Promi Alm in Flachau, Prechtlgut in Wagrain, DasKöniglich and Kellnergut chalet Frieda in Mühlbach am Hochkönig, Chalet Molly in Zell am See and both Senhoog chalets in Leogang. Wellness can differ by unit, so check the category.
Every figure on this page comes from an official source and at least one independent source. Where they disagreed, we left the number out.
Getting to the lifts
The distances are copied from the listing sources and use their wording. A figure of a few hundred metres is a short walk; several kilometres usually means a shuttle or a car. Where a source gives nothing, we say it is not confirmed.
