There is no single average chalet price that reliably describes a small self catered apartment, a large catered house and a staffed luxury chalet. Compare the same dates, adult beds, services and cancellation terms. The worked figures below show how to calculate a budget; they are not market averages.
Start with the booking total
Use this calculation: accommodation for the whole stay plus obligatory extras plus travel plus activities plus meals and optional services equals the expected holiday spend. Divide that total by the actual paying guests only after deciding how your group will share costs.
Keep a refundable deposit separate. It still affects the money you need available, but it is not an expected expense if it is returned in full. Record cancellation exposure separately too, because the amount at risk can increase before departure.
| Budget item | Question to resolve |
|---|---|
| Accommodation | Is the quote per house, unit, person or night, and for how many guests? |
| Cleaning and linen | Included, obligatory extra or optional service? |
| Local charges | Which taxes or levies apply to each guest and night? |
| Travel | Whole party cost including luggage, transfers or parking? |
| Skiing | Actual days, age categories, equipment and lessons? |
| Food | Which meals and drinks are already included? |
| Extras | Pet charges, childcare, spa admission or deliveries? |
A published Ischgl price example
On 29 October 2026, LUF Lodges publishes an eight person Rooftop Sauna Lodge rate of €1,136 per day for its Ski Start/Firn periods, including 10 April to 2 May 2027. The price information includes final cleaning, adds local tax of €4 per person per day from age fifteen and states that the listed rates apply from four nights, with a supplement for shorter stays. Confirm the final quote and availability with the operator.1
For eight adults staying four nights entirely within that quoted April price period, the calculation is:
| Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|
| Accommodation €1,136 × 4 nights | €4,544 |
| Local tax €4 × 8 adults × 4 nights | €128 |
| Accommodation and listed local tax | €4,672 |
| Per adult for the four night stay | €584 |
This is an arithmetic example using a published tariff, not a live availability quote or the total ski holiday cost. Transport, skiing, food and any other chosen services still need to be added. Do not apply it to another category, date period or occupancy.
An illustrative full holiday budget
The following separate example uses invented round inputs to explain the method for eight adults and seven nights. These figures are assumptions, not researched price estimates, recommended spending levels or a quote for an Austrian resort.
| Assumed cost for eight adults | Group total |
|---|---|
| Chalet rental | €3,200 |
| Final cleaning | €180 |
| Linen | €80 |
| Local charges | €200 |
| Return travel and transfers | €1,000 |
| Ski passes at an assumed €450 each | €3,600 |
| Equipment at an assumed €140 each | €1,120 |
| Groceries | €720 |
| Restaurants and drinks | €800 |
| Total assumed holiday spend | €10,900 |
| Per adult | €1,362.50 |
The rental share in this illustration is €400 per person, but the complete assumed holiday share is €1,362.50. The point is the gap between a house price and a holiday price. Replace every input with an actual quote before using the calculation to decide what you can spend.
Occupancy can change the apparent value
If the same assumed €3,200 chalet is shared by six adults rather than eight, the rental share rises from €400 to approximately €533.33. Other costs may fall, remain fixed or change by a different amount. Recalculate the full total rather than increasing everything by the same percentage.
Ask how the provider prices additional guests and children. A headline based on a smaller party may carry supplements above a threshold. A bed on a sofa may reduce the price per person while changing the common room available to everyone.
For groups, agree cost sharing before booking. You might divide equally, by household or by room, but the accommodation provider's charge can still be fixed for the whole property. Keep the amount owed clear if someone later withdraws.

Catered versus self catered costs
Compare equivalent meals rather than treating one catering label as a full week of food. Count breakfasts, evening meals, drinks and the staff's days off. For self catering, include groceries, restaurant visits and any delivery or shopping transport.
A catered property can save organising time, which may matter more than a small price difference to the person otherwise doing the cooking. A self catered chalet can give more flexibility for children's meals and different daily schedules. The catered comparison guide explains those arrangements.
Avoid counting meals twice. If breakfast is included in a serviced apartment, reduce the grocery budget accordingly. If a chalet provides only a breakfast delivery option at extra cost, add the selected service rather than assuming it belongs to the base rate.

Regional charges need dates as well as amounts
Local taxes and other charges can vary by destination, age and travel date. Ask for the line items in the quote and distinguish charges included in the displayed total from those collected later.
As one specific example, Zell am See-Kaprun publishes a separate mobility levy of €0.50 per person per night from age fifteen, increasing to €1.10 from 1 May 2027. That is a mobility levy, rather than a universal Austrian tourist tax or a complete list of regional charges.2
Check the quote for your particular property and dates before inserting a tax amount in a comparison. A single copied number used across the whole country can distort an otherwise careful budget.

Short breaks need their own comparison
Cleaning, travel and some services are spread over fewer nights on a short stay. A lower total does not necessarily mean a lower cost per usable ski day. Compare a three night break with a four night break using actual prices rather than extending a weekly rate mechanically.
Include late arrival, early departure, equipment collection and whether you can ski on the last day. The short ski breaks guide provides a method for comparing the time you gain with the amount you spend.

Flexibility is part of the price
The European Consumer Centre explains that accommodation cancellation policies can differ, including restrictive and more flexible rates. Keep the exact conditions with each price you compare.3
Record the deposit due now, the balance date and what you would lose at each cancellation stage. A slightly higher flexible rate can be worth investigating if the group's plans are uncertain, but compare the actual terms rather than assuming the word flexible means a full refund at any time.

Practical answers
Questions about chalet holiday costs
Is the cheapest price always per person?
No. Check whether it is per unit, night, person or stay, and identify the occupancy used to display it.
Is a refundable deposit part of the holiday cost?
Keep it separate from expected spending, while budgeting for the money to be held temporarily and for the conditions of return.
Are the illustrative budget numbers current Austrian averages?
No. They are explicit assumptions used to demonstrate the arithmetic. Obtain quotes for every input before budgeting your own trip.
Does the Ischgl calculation include skiing and travel?
No. It shows the stated accommodation tariff and local tax for the described party and period. It is not a complete holiday quote.
What should we compare first?
Compare final accommodation totals for the same dates and guests, then add the activities and transport each location actually requires.
Browse large chalets, catered properties or all stays, keeping one complete group budget beside each candidate. The best value is the arrangement that meets the group's needs at a total everyone understands.
