How we compare chalets in Austria

Every number on a stay page carries a label. Here is what the labels mean and the checks behind them.

Where the facts come from

Every stay begins with its listing description. From there we hunt for a second, independent English-language description of the same property and set the two side by side: capacity, bedrooms, bathrooms, facilities. When they agree, we call the fact confirmed. When only one source says it, it is listed. When they disagree, or we find nothing, we leave the number out rather than guess.

For the stays that come from our own research of the finer end of the market, we also read the owner's own website and the room pages of each unit. A unit is a separate booking: a chalet with three apartments is three units, and we show the capacity of the unit you would actually book, not the largest one in the building.

The three labels

LabelMeaning
ConfirmedTwo independent sources agree.
ListedOne source says so, usually the owner.
Not confirmedUnknown or the sources disagree. We show no number.

Is it really that property?

Before a stay goes on the site we check that the booking listing is the property we describe. We match it by name, by exact street address or by the title the booking page shows for that property. A listing we cannot match with certainty is held back, even when it looks right. A stay without real photographs of that stay is held back too.

Chalet, apartment or hotel

An apartment in a chalet-style building is not the same holiday as a whole chalet to yourselves, so we keep them apart. Hotels and apartment hotels are counted separately too. If you are unsure which suits your group, the guide to chalets and apartments walks through the differences.

Access to the lifts

Distances to the piste and lift are copied from the listing as it states them. We only say ski-in/ski-out when the owner or provider says so themselves. Being near a lift is not the same thing, and it is the detail people most often get wrong. The ski-in ski-out chalets page explains how to check the way back as well as the way out.

Why there are no prices

A chalet's rate moves with the week, the group size and the conditions, and we have no live feed. A number copied from an old page would only mislead you, so each stay sends you to the provider for dates and the final figure. The booking box on a stay page carries your dates across, so the provider opens on your week.

Ski area facts

Figures for ski areas, such as piste kilometres and lifts, appear only when an official source and an independent one agree. When they do not, the destination page says so and shows no number. Every destination and guide page ends with the sources it used.

Stars

Most chalets and apartments have no official star rating. Where an owner or an official source states a classification, we show those stars and say whose they are. We never calculate or invent stars.

Photos

Photos show the stay they are labelled with. Each photo has a description that names the property and the place, so you know what you are looking at before you open it.

Selection and order

A stay gets on the list when it has an English booking route and we are sure the listing really is that property. The order follows facts like capacity, never commission. More on how we earn.
