Chalets in Neukirchen and Bramberg

Neukirchen am Großvenediger and Bramberg am Wildkogel share the Wildkogel Arena, a 75 km ski area in the Pinzgau region of Salzburgerland, beside the Hohe Tauern National Park. Most of its pistes are easy or intermediate, which makes it a good fit for families and mixed groups. Here we compare a twelve-person chalet, a whole house with a sauna and a three-bedroom chalet apartment.

Details as listed by the owner

Small is the selling point here. The Wildkogelbahn rises from Neukirchen and the Smaragdbahn from Bramberg, both villages are stops on the narrow-gauge Pinzgau railway from Zell am See, and the slopes are compact enough for a group of mixed ability to ski together. Strong skiers chasing new terrain every day will cover the area quickly; beginners and families get a manageable week.

Our selection on the Wildkogel is short, and we keep it plain. One chalet has a confirmed capacity of twelve but no confirmed layout. One house lists a private sauna and a fenced garden but gives two different capacities. One apartment is fully described but sits a few kilometres from the lift. Each section below sets out what we know and what you should ask.

A smaller ski area can be exactly right for a group with mixed abilities. Check the piste split, not just the total.

The ski area

The Wildkogel Arena: a 75 km ski area above Neukirchen and Bramberg

The Wildkogel Arena counts 75 km of pistes, a figure the lift company and an independent ski-resort database agree on. It lies between the Kitzbühel Alps and the Hohe Tauern National Park, in the Pinzgau region of Salzburgerland, and it is shared by two villages: Neukirchen am Großvenediger and Bramberg am Wildkogel. Each has its own valley lift, so either works as a base.

Size is the honest headline. At 75 km the area is a fraction of the big linked names in Salzburgerland and Tyrol, so a strong skier who wants new pistes every day will know it well by midweek. For a mixed group, that scale works the other way round: short distances between runs, simple meeting points at lunch, and little chance of anyone ending up in the wrong valley at four o'clock.

If your group needs the bigger circuit, compare the Zillertal Arena or Kitzbühel and Kirchberg first, and use our guide to the best Austrian ski resorts for chalet holidays to weigh size against ease. For many families, though, the Wildkogel's modest scale is the reason to come rather than a compromise they put up with.

Terrain by level

Wildkogel skiing for beginners, intermediates and stronger skiers

The piste split is 47 per cent easy, 40 per cent intermediate and 13 per cent difficult, according to the area and an independent database. The lift company describes 85 per cent of its slopes as blue or red, and both it and the regional tourist boards present the Wildkogel as a resort for families, beginners and people returning to skiing after a break.

For first-timers, that large share of easy pistes means there is plenty of gentle terrain to move on to once the nursery slope is behind them. Returning skiers, a group the lift company names alongside families and beginners, get the same benefit: enough easy pistes to rebuild confidence before they move on to the reds.

Intermediates get the most from the Wildkogel: blue and red runs make up most of the mileage, so confident cruising fills a week. Stronger skiers will find the 13 per cent of black runs enough for a few good mornings, though probably not for six days. If one of your group lives for steep pistes, a day trip or a different base is worth discussing before you book, and Saalbach-Hinterglemm is one Salzburgerland alternative to compare.

In the school holiday weeks, book ski school, ski hire and any private lessons before you travel rather than on the first morning, because the popular lesson times go early. Ask the owner which ski school is nearest to the chalet and whether lessons start at the Wildkogelbahn in Neukirchen or the Smaragdbahn in Bramberg, and plan the morning run to the lift around that answer.

Off the skis

The 14 km Wildkogel toboggan run

One of the Wildkogel's defining features is its toboggan run. It is 14 km long, floodlit, and drops about 1,300 vertical metres from close to 2,100 m back down to the valley. The start sits near the top of the Smaragdbahn from Bramberg; if you ride the Wildkogelbahn up from Neukirchen, a short walk across the top takes you to it.

Because the run is lit, evening sledging is part of what the lift company sells, and that changes how a chalet week can be planned. A late afternoon on the slopes, an early dinner and a floodlit descent is a full day without a car. Check the current evening schedule with the lift company before you plan around it, since lift hours change through the season.

For a chalet group it is the easiest whole-party activity of the week. Non-skiers can join the skiers, a rest day gets filled without driving anywhere, and 14 km gives everyone a story for dinner. Ask your chalet owner where to hire a sledge if you are not bringing your own, and wear proper gloves and goggles: it is a long way at speed.

Where to stay

Neukirchen or Bramberg: where our Wildkogel chalets sit

Neukirchen am Großvenediger sits at about 856 m, below the Wildkogelbahn, and carries the name of the Großvenediger, one of the highest mountains in Austria. Two of our three stays are in Neukirchen: a whole chalet for twelve and a whole house with a private sauna. Both are rented in full, so your group has the place to itself.

Bramberg am Wildkogel has its own valley lift, the Smaragdbahn, which climbs to the start of the toboggan run. Our one stay in Bramberg is listed 4.1 km from the lift, which shows that the village name alone does not tell you how close you will be to the snow. In both villages, the lift distance of the individual stay counts for more than which village you pick.

Because the area is small, switching between the two valley lifts is a short drive or a train ride. A car still makes a week here much simpler, especially if your chalet is beyond walking distance of either lift. If you are travelling without one, ask the owner about the ski bus, the nearest stop and the times it runs in the morning.

A group larger than twelve, or two households that want their own front doors, can pair two stays. The Neukirchen chalet and the Maier Alm are in the same village, which keeps everyone on the same valley lift and within reach of each other for shared dinners. Check that your dates are free at both before you pay either deposit, and agree early which house hosts the big meals.

Getting there

Getting to Neukirchen and Bramberg by rail, road and air

Both villages are on the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn, the narrow-gauge railway that runs about 53 km up the valley from Zell am See to Krimml. At Zell am See it connects with the main Austrian rail network, so a train journey to a Wildkogel chalet is realistic, with a change onto the local line for the last stretch.

Salzburg and Innsbruck are the airports visitors use for the Wildkogel, and the published road distances from each of them disagree, depending on where they are measured. We do not quote a figure. Ask your transfer company for the time to your chalet's address, and leave margin for winter road conditions on the drive into the Pinzgau.

Driving gives you the most freedom, since our stays are split between two villages and one is a few kilometres from the lift. For the bigger picture on flights, trains and transfers, read our guide to getting to your chalet in Austria. For a base at the start of the railway, with its own ski area, see our page on Zell am See.

If you travel by rail, ask the owner how far the chalet is from the nearest Pinzgauer Lokalbahn stop and whether they can meet you there. Station distance matters as much as lift distance when you arrive with skis and a week of luggage. Fix a taxi or a pick-up before you travel, because the last few kilometres are the part of the journey a timetable does not solve.

Season and evenings

When the Wildkogel season runs, and what evenings look like

The winter season runs from December to Easter, according to the area and an independent database. That makes the February half-term and the Easter holidays both workable for a family trip, although the snow at either end of any Alpine season depends on the year. If your dates are flexible, the middle of the winter gives the most margin.

We have not rated bars or restaurants in Neukirchen or Bramberg and do not name any here. For most chalet groups, the evening plan is the chalet: a long dinner, the sauna if you have one, and an early night before the first lift. The floodlit toboggan run is the one evening activity we can point to with confidence.

None of our listings for these three stays mentions catering, so plan the food. A big shop on arrival day saves time later, and with twelve people a long table matters more than a big kitchen. If being cooked for matters to your group, read our guide to catered and self-catered chalets and compare the catered chalets we list in Austria.

Families

Family ski holidays on the Wildkogel

The Wildkogel's case for families rests on its numbers: nearly half the pistes are easy, most of the rest are intermediate, and the area is small enough that parents and children are rarely far apart. The lift company calls the resort compact and lists children's areas and ski schools, and the regional tourist boards present it as a place for families and beginners.

For a family chalet, settle the bathrooms before anything else. The Neukirchen chalet has a confirmed capacity of twelve but no confirmed bathroom count. The Maier Alm lists a bathroom per bedroom. The Bramberg apartment has one bathroom for six. With small children one bathroom works; with teenagers, or two families sharing, ask for more.

Two practical checks round it off. If the dog is coming, note that the Maier Alm listing excludes pets, and look at our dog-friendly chalets in Austria before you commit elsewhere. If grandparents or non-skiers are joining, the toboggan run and the summer lifts give them something to share with the rest of the party rather than a week spent waiting at the chalet.

Summer

Summer chalets by the Hohe Tauern National Park

Summer may be the stronger season for a Wildkogel chalet. Neukirchen and Bramberg lie beside the Hohe Tauern National Park, and the Wildkogelbahn keeps running in summer, when walking takes over from skiing as the reason to go up. A chalet here works as a base for walks at every level, from lift-assisted family days to long routes into the side valleys.

The Krimml Waterfalls are at the end of the same railway line, in Krimml. They fall 380 m in three stages, which makes them one of the clearest day trips for a group staying in either village. Without a car, the train turns it into an easy outing, and with one you are free to combine it with a walk.

Before booking a summer week, check what your chalet offers for outdoor living: a garden, a terrace, and somewhere to dry boots. The Maier Alm lists a fenced garden of 110 m². For more on choosing a walking base, see our guide to hiking holidays in Austria and our page on summer chalet holidays in Austria.

Our stays

Neukirchen chalets and a Bramberg chalet apartment, compared

Nationalpark Chalet Malhamhorn in Neukirchen is the largest stay we list on the Wildkogel, confirmed by two sources for twelve guests. That suits two or three families, or a group of friends who want one house rather than several apartments, and it belongs among our large chalets for groups. Bedrooms and bathrooms are not confirmed, so ask for the layout first.

Maier Alm is a 135 m² house in Neukirchen, rented whole. The owner lists a private sauna, a fireplace, wifi and a washing machine, plus a fenced garden of 110 m². The owner and the manager give different capacities, six against eight, so we treat six as the safe number. The listing excludes pets and smoking and states there is no electric-car charging.

Chalet Apartment Leiter in Bramberg am Wildkogel is the most completely described of the three: 86 m² over two floors, three bedrooms and one bathroom for six. The lift is listed 4.1 km away, so a car or a dependable bus is part of the plan. It suits a family of up to six who value separate bedrooms over a second bathroom; see our ski apartments in Austria for similar options.

Ask each owner the same three questions: the bathroom count, the distance to the nearest lift or ski bus stop, and what the kitchen includes. On a selection this small, those three answers usually decide the booking. Ask for them in writing, and keep the replies, so that the details you planned the week around are the details you find when you arrive.

How to choose

How to choose between the Wildkogel chalets

Start with the size of your group. Twelve people point straight to Nationalpark Chalet Malhamhorn; six point to the Maier Alm house or the Bramberg apartment. Then weigh the lift distance against the house itself: Chalet Apartment Leiter is the furthest from the lift but the best documented, and Maier Alm is the only one of the three with a sauna in its listing.

We separate confirmed facts from details listed by a single source, and explain why on our page about how we compare chalets. Where a figure is missing we say so rather than guess, and on the Wildkogel that applies to more fields than we would like. Treat each gap as a question for the owner, not as a reason to rule a stay out.

If none of these three fits, widen the search within the province. Our Salzburgerland chalet selection covers every village we compare there. The full list of ski chalets in Austria lets you compare stays across Salzburgerland and Tyrol, and the Ski amadé page for Flachau and Wagrain shows a much larger ski area with several lodges that list a sauna in every chalet.

Practical answers

Questions about Neukirchen and Bramberg

Skiing on the Wildkogel

How big is the Wildkogel Arena ski area?

The Wildkogel Arena has 75 km of pistes, a figure the lift company and an independent ski-resort database agree on. The split is about 47 per cent easy, 40 per cent intermediate and 13 per cent difficult. It is shared by Neukirchen am Großvenediger and Bramberg am Wildkogel, each with its own valley lift.

Is the Wildkogel good for beginners?

Yes, on the numbers. Nearly half of the Wildkogel's pistes are easy and most of the rest are intermediate, and both the lift company and the regional tourist boards present it as a resort for families and beginners. Ask your chalet owner which valley lift is the meeting point for ski school.

How long is the Wildkogel toboggan run?

The Wildkogel toboggan run is 14 km long and floodlit, with a drop of about 1,300 vertical metres to the valley. It starts near the top of the Smaragdbahn from Bramberg, and riders coming up the Wildkogelbahn from Neukirchen reach the start on foot after a short walk across the top.

When is the ski season on the Wildkogel?

The Wildkogel winter season runs from December to Easter, according to the ski area and an independent database. Snow at either end of the season depends on the year, so mid-winter is the safer choice for a family week. Check the lift company's opening dates before you book travel.

Getting to Neukirchen and Bramberg

Can you get to Neukirchen am Großvenediger by train?

Yes. Neukirchen and Bramberg are both stops on the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn, a narrow-gauge railway of about 53 km from Zell am See to Krimml. Zell am See connects with the main Austrian rail network, so you change onto the local line there for the last part of the journey.

Which airport is best for Neukirchen and Bramberg?

Salzburg and Innsbruck are the airports visitors use for Neukirchen and Bramberg. Published road distances from both disagree, so we do not quote one. Ask your transfer company for the journey time to your chalet's address, and allow extra time for winter roads on arrival day.

Do you need a car for a chalet holiday in Neukirchen or Bramberg?

A car is not essential, because both villages have a station on the Pinzgau railway and their own valley lift. It does make the week easier, especially if your chalet is beyond walking distance of the lift. Our Bramberg apartment, for example, is listed 4.1 km from the lift.

Wildkogel chalets and summer

Which chalet in Neukirchen sleeps twelve people?

Nationalpark Chalet Malhamhorn in Neukirchen am Großvenediger is confirmed by two sources for twelve guests and is rented as a whole chalet. The number of bedrooms and bathrooms is not confirmed yet, so ask the owner for the layout and the bathroom count before a group of twelve commits.

Is there a chalet with a sauna in Neukirchen am Großvenediger?

The owner of the Maier Alm, a 135 m² house in Neukirchen rented whole, lists a private sauna, a fireplace and a fenced garden of 110 m². Its capacity differs between the owner and the manager, six against eight, so we treat six as the safe number until they agree.

Can you take a dog to a chalet on the Wildkogel?

The Maier Alm listing in Neukirchen excludes pets. For Nationalpark Chalet Malhamhorn and Chalet Apartment Leiter we have no confirmed pet policy, so ask the owner directly before you book. If the dog is coming, compare chalets that explicitly accept dogs in other parts of Austria.

What can you do in Neukirchen and Bramberg in summer?

In summer the Wildkogelbahn keeps running for walkers, and both villages sit beside the Hohe Tauern National Park, which makes them a good base for walking at every level. The Krimml Waterfalls, 380 m high in three stages, are at the end of the same railway line.

How do you get from Neukirchen to the Krimml Waterfalls?

The Krimml Waterfalls are in Krimml, the end of the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn line that also stops at Neukirchen and Bramberg. The train is a simple way to make the trip without a car. The falls drop 380 m in three stages. We could not confirm a road distance from two sources, so none is quoted.
